re/JOY

About the exhibition

Ceramic artist Vipoo Srivilasa’s solo exhibition re/JOY represents his most significant body of work to date, and the largest he has ever attempted. For this collaborative community project Vipoo has taken seven precious, yet broken, ceramic objects donated by strangers, each with their own story of migration to different parts of Australia. Around these pieces he has built seven towering, large-scale works, plus a smaller one in honour of his own story. re/JOY aims to engage with overseas-born Australians, but anyone will recognise the connections we form with objects that hold special memories and can evoke strong emotions.

About the artists

For nearly three decades, Vipoo Srivilasa (AUS/THA) has developed a distinctive practice engaging with complex questions of queerness, migration and spiritual meaning through an artistic language that is accessible, positive and beautiful.

His work explores experiences of isolation, loneliness and nostalgia, alongside joy, beauty and hope. Alongside his studio practice, Vipoo has also developed a significant participatory practice, creating projects that invite people to become part of the creative process through storytelling, clay and shared making.

Vipoo has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally, including at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Saatchi Gallery, London; Ayala Museum, Philippines; Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan; Nanjing Arts Institute, China; and the National Gallery of Thailand.

He holds a Bachelor of Art (Ceramics) from Rangsit University, Bangkok, a Graduate Diploma of Arts (Ceramics) from Monash University, Melbourne, and a Master of Fine Art and Design from the University of Tasmania, Hobart.

Vipoo lives and works in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia, where his studio, ClayLAB, is situated in Cheltenham on the lands of the Kulin Nation.
