Burnie Regional Gallery

About the venue

The basement space located under the Burnie Arts & Function (the former Burnie Civic Centre that opened in 1976) was originally destined to be a car park. But by public demand and a far reaching vision of the Council, the area, with the help of Federal, State and local government funds, became the Burnie Regional Art Gallery, the third purpose built public art gallery in Tasmania. It was opened in 1978 and has now built a national reputation on the strength of its collection, the biennial Burnie Print Prize, and its promotion and support of the art of printmaking.

It has three main galleries with 115 running metres of wall space, as well as a small Foyer Space for small displays. Additional hanging space is available through the installation of temporary movable walls. Apart from exhibitions, it is suitable for small scale receptions, performances and meetings.(See Venue Hire details)

The Gallery has its own extensive exhibition program, more than 30 visual and performing arts projects every year (See what’s on.) and with the support of an active Friends of the Gallery group, many events involving community groups are staged throughout the year.
