About the exhibition

MAPh is currently seeking expressions of interest for our new travelling exhibition, ZAHALKAWORLD: an artist’s archive. Anne Zahalka is one of Australia’s most highly regarded photo-media artists who has exhibited extensively in Australia and overseas for over 40 years. Her work explores cultural and environmental points of tension, interrogating them with humour and a critical perspective. ZAHALKAWORLD – an artist’s archive is a major survey exhibition centred on the artist’s archive and brings together key bodies of work that span Zahalka’s practice presented alongside collected treasures from her archive that inform and inspire her. Imaginative, immersive, and playful, the exhibition invites audiences into the artist’s working life and her creative process to explore the illusionary worlds for which she is renowned. There are eight core bodies of work that form the basis of the exhibition featuring iconic series including Bondi: Playground of the Pacific, The Landscape Re-presented, Resemblance and Resemblance II, Wild Life and Wild Life Australia, Open House and Hotel Suite. There are three additional series that venues can also select including Leisureland, The Fate of Things, and Kunstkammer – an installation that recreates the artist’s home studio within the exhibition space. Accompanying the exhibition is a major publication proudly supported by the Gordon Darling Foundation.
