The World Came Flooding In

The World Came Flooding In is an immersive and sensitive portrayal of life before, during and after natural disaster. Detailed miniature sets combined with community-made replicas of lost furniture evoke the rich inner world that remains when everything is washed away. Through virtual reality, projections, miniatures, photographs and sound, The World Came Flooding In explores the rich inner world that remains when everything is washed away. Hear from three flood-affected individuals – Marina, Antoinette and Tom – as they share their personal stories of living through climate disaster. Separated by thousands of kilometres but united in their experience, these voices share a powerful collective narrative. Using cardboard and other simple materials, the artists recreate the flooded homes of each storyteller in miniature. These models are then translated into virtual reality through photogrammetry, offering a wondrous 30-minute VR experience where the audience physically move through life-sized digital scans of these miniature rooms, guided by the voice of the person who lived there. Complementing the VR, the installation is a rich world of mixed media that deepens the virtual-reality narrative, with sculptural miniatures offering an augmented-reality experience. Photographs of furniture created during community workshops, along with projections and sound design, extend the story, creating a multifaceted exploration of personal memory, loss and transcendence. The World Came Flooding In is designed to be modular, for a variety of exhibition contexts. Multiple elements (VR, AR, projection, miniature sets, and photographs) can be shown to suit venue requirements. Exhibition includes: ● 1 interactive 25” virtual-reality film on up to 4 headsets, each viewed standing in an area 3m2 or seated in a swivel chair in a 1.25m diameter area ● 3 miniature sculptures on plinths with at least 1m space around each between them ● Up to 19 photographs with augmented reality (approx 8 running metres) ● 2 x HD looped projections (no sound) ● Stereo soundscape loop
