About the exhibition

An exhibition of 22 collaged artworks made entirely out of recycled postage stamps. Each artwork is based on a well-known image of a recognisable iconic figure from popular culture, history, music, television or the arts. Examples include; Barack Obama, Marilyn Monroe, Hitler, Marge Simpson, Ned Kelly, Salvador Dali and Bob Marley. Each portrait contains hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of hand cut postage stamps, recycling the old into the new. Each stamp selected for use is related in some way to the iconic person being represented. For instance the portrait of Ghandi is made entirely out of postage stamps featuring the Queen, which refers to his relationship with the British Empire. At face value these artworks are comprised of images and materials that are not new, however, being constructed in a new and innovative way raises the question - is there Nothing New?

Marlies Oakley is a mixed media artist, born in Berlin in 1964. She moved to London in 1997 and then on to Sydney in 2001. Marlies graduated from the National Art School in 2010, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting (Honours) and she now lives and works in Bundaberg, Queensland. Marlies is an experimental artist whose interest and style is based on detail, repetition and pattern. Therefore collage is the medium that Marlies is drawn to over and over again. With strong interests in kitsch objects, popular culture, religious icons and surrealism, Marlies’s subject matter is never dull. Marlies has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Sydney, and throughout Queensland. She has also been highly commended in the Rio Tinto Alcan Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards, Gladstone, QLD in 2014 and was awarded a paid artist in residence placement in Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA in 2015.
