Midawarr | Harvest explores the plants of the Dhudi-Djapu clan lands of East Arnhem Land north-east Arnhem Land through stunning artworks by Yolngu elder Mulkun Wirrpanda and internationally recognised landscape painter John Wolseley. The works of these two artists, both at the peak of their careers, reflect a remarkable relationship built on cross-cultural collaboration; a relationship that ushers in a new phase of Australian landscape painting.

Their collaboration has resulted in a body of artworks including bark paintings, larrakitj (decorated memorial poles), printmaking and a monumental watercolour and mixed media painting. The contrast between the featured works of art from a senior Indigenous and a senior non-Indigenous artist presents two different but complementary world views of a unique bio diverse region of Australia. It encourages the visitor to think about the way we connect, use, value and understand our environment, considering issues of biodiversity, sustainability, and landscape.

Midawarr | Harvest will inspire the viewer to understand alternative modes of representing country, explore Yolngu relationships with the land and its capacity to provide for and nourish life and reintroduce new ‘old’ ways of thinking about the environment. This National Museum of Australia exhibition also features immersive multimedia experiences created by the Yolngu community to give visitors insights into the special relationship between these two artists, and ancient Yolngu knowledge of sustainable living.

A beautiful book title, Midawarr | Harvest: The Art of Mulkun Wirrpanda and John Wolseley, has been specially published in support of this exhibition. For more information see http://www.nma.gov.au/exhibitions/midawarr-harvest/book
