About the exhibition
Materiality...But not as we know it features 10 Australian contemporary artists and makers whose work site in the nexus between sculpture and design and defies the establishes debates between the disciplines.
The artist’s work is distinguished by an iconoclastic approach, disregarding the Modernist tenet of ‘truth to materials’ often seen in design practice, and instead proposing new understandings and considerations of object making; evident in the fusion of art making with functional objects like tools, lighting, and furniture as well as unexpected pairings and surprising use of materials.
Materiality...but not as we know it advocates for experimentation and innovation, provokes new ways of thinking, and showcases recent or new work that is critically alert to the key concerns of our time.
