About the exhibition

It’s a party and everyone is invited to join Big Ted, Humpty, Little Ted and Jemima to celebrate!

This colourful exhibition takes a look behind the scenes and celebrates some of Play School’s regular features – telling the time with the Rocket and Flower clocks and exploring the outside world through the arch, round and square windows. It reveals how the show is put together, what makes the program such a success and considers the changing nature and experience of Australian childhood.

Happy Birthday Play School honours Australia’s longest-running children’s television program and its special place in peoples’ hearts. The exhibition explores over five decades of Play School by featuring toys, props and costumes from each period, alongside archival audio and video clips of past programs and presenters having fun.

Generations of Australians have grown up with Play school and adults and children across the country continue to enjoy the program, which currently appears on ABC Kids four times a day reaching an audience of over 1 million viewers each week. Play School also has its own high quality apps, spin off series’ and a strong web presence.

This exhibition offers venues the chance to connect to the biggest birthday bash of the decade – excitement will be high and fun will be had.

A travelling exhibition from the National Museum of Australia developed in collaboration with the ABC. Supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.
