About the exhibition

Museums & Galleries Queensland, in partnership with Onespace Gallery is seeking expressions of interest for an exciting new touring initiative, Demagogues and Megalomaniacs by Jay Younger.

Jay Younger says:

'The purpose motivating the Demagogues and Megalomaniacs series is to question the absurdity of neo-liberal and despotic political leaders in our national and global arena. This series employs satirical photomontage drawn from popular culture with Bush, Reagan and Thatcher, Pauline Hanson, Clive Palmer, Trump and Kim Jong-Un as its abominable targets.

Highlighting political absurdity, in this instance, photography captures the chance element of process in flux. Satirical photomontage etched into mirror in combination with the precarious physicality of smoke comments on spin and the ephemerality of truth in our post-truth era.’

Jay Younger is an artist and curator and is currently Visual Arts Program Director at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Generally, Jay’s artworks take form as photomedia, public art and installation with the purpose of interrogating notions of democracy and public space that is informed by a feminist perspective. For Jay, art that appears in the public realm and activates public space is not only political, but it makes space public, thereby linking freedom of artistic expression to democratic principles.
